The reference photos for this painting were taken by my son while we were on a houseboat holiday on the Murray, where a group of pelicans preening is a common sight. The Australian Pelican has the longest bill of any bird in the world. On land they can look a little clumsy and top-heavy. In flight, however, they lose all their awkwardness as they tuck those beaks into their chest feathers and soar majestically across the sky in formation. So, while "Pelican Pod" has an alliterative ring to it, "squadron" is my favourite word for a group of pelicans. This group is undergoing a bit of maintenance while they are on standby for their next flight.
